What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is the body's cellular-waste removal system; it also plays an essential role in the immune system. The lymphatic system is made up of lymph vessels that carry lymph fluid from extremities to the lymph ducts which eventually dump into the veins where it mixes back in with blood.
The lymph system unlike the blood is not moved through the body with a pump but rather moved via contraction of muscle through movement or exercise.
The lymphatic system also connects a system of lymph nodes throughout the whole body. Lymph nodes are part of your body's vital immune system and also help trap and filter toxins, and unwanted particles. When fighting an infection these lymph nodes may swell as the body brings bacteria back to the lymph nodes to be destroyed by white blood cells.
Your lymphatic system does a lot more than just fight disease. It is also responsible for returning undigested proteins, fats, and carbohydrates back into circulation.
Why do we need to cleanse our lymphatic system?
Over time for many reasons the body's lymphatic system may become thick, sluggish, and congested. When this happens the lymphatic system is not able to freely move lymph fluid through the body thus no longer filtering unwanted particles properly. If lymphatic flow is impaired, the thick and toxic lymph fluid can become a breeding ground for infection.
The lymphatic system is a major contributor to the spread of cancer as cancer cells from a primary tumor can either become trapped in lymph nodes, or small lymph vessels, or can spread against the normal flow of lymph as it becomes stagnant or congested leading to secondary tumors.
Daily or periodic cleansing of the lymphatic system can help in the prevention of chronic inflammation and pain, cellulite, fatty deposits, digestive issues, water retention, and chronic and degenerative disorders.
How to create a well functioning lymphatic system!
- Clean Alkaline Diet - Avoid refined junk foods, drink plenty of water, include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, include plenty of healthy omega 3 fats, and lots of fiber.
- Dry Skin Brush - Use a natural bristle brush and work in a circular motion from the extremities toward the heart. This will promote lymphatic flow, stimulate circulation, and cleanse the body through the skin.
- Exercise - Although all exercise helps, to promote lymphatic flow the best types of exercise is low impact exercise such as yoga, brisk walking while dramatically swinging your arms, and bouncing on a mini rebounder or trampoline.
- Massage - Muscles and can become tense and block the flow of lymph drainage. Regular massage can help ensure the muscles stay relaxed and allow for better lymphatic flow.
- Deep Breathing - Not only does deep breathing allow for better oxygen flow and circulation creating better lymphatic flow, but it also helps reduce stress levels which are one of the major causes of constricted lymph movement. Stress creates many of its own toxins in the body which must be cleansed via the lymphatic system and also causes poor drainage.
